UPDATE:

1up, citing “sources close to the project," is reporting that Yakuza 3 is now in the process of being localised for release in both North America and Europe. Tag this under rumor for now, though, until we hear an official confirmation from the boys at SEGA.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

SEGA has moved to quash reports suggesting that a U.S. conversion of PS3 brawler Yakuza 3 has been firmly ruled out, insisting there's always a possibility the game may arrive on western shores.

Rumors cropped up earlier this year that a North American release of the title had been firmly ruled out by the company as a result of poor sales of the first two games outside of its native Japan. However, posting in the comments section on the U.S. PlayStation Blog, SEGA’s Aaron Webbster stated, "Yakuza 3 is not cancelled – and the possibility for localizing it does, in fact, still exist.”

“The original news story that went around about Yakuza 3 being declined for the US was false, and localizing the game still remains a big point of discussion for many people here at SEGA, and especially those of us on SEGA’s community team.I know it’s far from an announcement, but I just felt you should know that the chance does still exist.”

Yakuza 3 hit Japanese retailers earlier this year, with plans for a fourth installment already underway. Expect more news at the Tokyo Game Show next week.

Is there a super-demand for this?  I'm sure there's something good about it if they're working on the 4th one, but...

i think why it has'nt made it over here to the states is because sega wants this game hyped up and wanted to see how high the demand for it would be from north america because think about it yakuza 2 did'nt sell that much over here in the states and sold poorly and because of that sega was bit worried about yakuza 3 selling in the u.s and did'nt want to jeporize the entire franchise and so now since both yakuza games sold really well in japan they are waiting for high demand from both fans and ps3 owners in the u.s and to see how high it would be. which it is now and so they are talking about possiblitys of it making over here to the states at least one or possibly all three if they decide to localized yakuza 3 and kenzan and they sell alot in north america hope you do sega i am a big fan of the yakuza games and would'nt mind playing yakuza 3 or yakuza kenzan in the u.s

This will be a "day when I get a paycheck that can pay for it" purchase for me. Same as Tales of Vesperia.

Star Ocean will be a rent or something.

They don't need to localize it, just stick in some subtitles and bring it over.

Wait, so they say it wont get a western release, and they beat that horse to death, now they are saying it isnt firm?  Make up your freakin mind.  PSU probably could have held off reporting this til they got something more solid...quotas are not as important as entertaining your fanbase...which is sorely lacking.  under 16 kids do not count.

@ #6 and #19, 3 was released already, but only in Japan.  They are still deciding whether other countries will receive the game.
